Reduce Course Load Request

F-1/J-1 student visa rules require students to enroll in a full course load (12 credit hours undergraduate level, 9 credit hours graduate level) each required semester in order to maintain valid student visa status. F-1/J-1 students who are not able to maintain full time enrollment must submit the Reduced Course Load Form to ISS to request permission before dropping below full time.

Reduced Course Load Reason

Permission can be granted for a reduced course load only in certain situations, including a documented health reason, graduating semester or specific academic scenarios. Medical reason: Documentation is required from a licensed psychologist or physician (DO or MD). We will email you a template letter for your medical provider to complete. Academic: Documentation is required from your success coach/graduate advisor. Discuss your concern with your success coach or graduate advisor. They will receive an email requesting additional information.

How many credit hours are needed to complete your degree program? Note that a majority of your remaining credits must be in-person classes at St. Edward's University. If you are planning to take any classes in your final semester online, with another university or credit by exam (CLEP), please discuss with ISS.

Students can have a maximum of 12 months of reduced course load for each degree level. Reduced course load permission is specific to each semester. Students are required to reapply if additional time is needed in another semester. Contact ISS right away if you are using reduced course load for your graduating semester and you discover you will not graduate as planned. Do not drop your courses until ISS confirms your approval for reduced course load and sends your I-20 or DS-2019 granting permission. (type your name to confirm)
