Study Title: Social Justice Advocacy and Diversity Training in Behavioral Health

Jennifer Crawford, PhD, Assistant Professor, Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at the University of New Mexico, is conducting an education-related research study. The purpose of the study is to evaluate the usefulness of an online self-assessment of diversity and social justice training for behavioral health trainees, clinicians, and researchers. You are being asked to participate in this study because you are a behavioral health trainee, clinician, and/or researcher who has participated in some form of diversity and social justice training as a component of your formal or informal training.

Your participation will involve completing the online self-assessment, which asks about your past training experiences, including the types of training you have participated in and the topics, concepts, and populations you have experience with. You will also be asked to assess the areas of diversity and social justice you are most and least comfortable with, and your comfort level in various training situations; you will also be asked to reflect on your training strengths and goals. You will be asked to provide basic demographic information, including things like gender, race/ethnicity, and age, as well as things related to your training and area of expertise. You will also be asked for feedback about the self-assessment after completing it. Completion of the self-assessment and feedback survey will begin immediately after you read this consent form and decide whether you want to participate in this study. Time to complete the self-assessment and feedback is about 20-30 minutes. By selecting to be in the study, you are agreeing to allow the program the use of any responses and comments anonymously that you might provide. You may also be asked to complete a brief follow-up survey about your participation in diversity and social justice related training activities in the 2-18 months following completion of the self-assessment. These data will be collected through an electronic survey link you will receive via email, if you elect to provide your email for this purpose. This survey takes about 10 minutes to complete.

Identifying information will be kept in a separate secure database so that responses will not be linked to any one individual. You can refuse to answer any of the questions at any time and may stop participation in the survey by exiting it at any time. There are no known risks in this study, but some individuals may experience discomfort when answering questions. Security for online completion includes encryption of survey data, storage on secure servers with limited password protected access to the data. Only individuals working on the study at the University of New Mexico and the VA San Diego will have access to the data. All data, including the names and contact information that will be maintained in a separate file, will be kept on a secured database on password protected UNMHSC servers until all results are analyzed and the study is complete. The findings from this project will provide information on whether this format of the self-assessment is helpful for behavioral health trainees, clinicians, and researchers for identifying and completing diversity and social justice training goals. If presented, shared, or published, results will be presented in summary form and quotes will be de-identified. Deidentified data may be used and reported in summary format on a future public website designed to provide feedback to individuals, training programs, and professional organizations about the overall breadth and depth of diversity and social justice training in Psychology. In addition to consenting to participate in the study as described above, you may agree to let us use your data and responses in undetermined future research on social justice advocacy and diversity training. Data will be stored, separate from your name and email address, in a secure UNMHSC network folder available after the current study only to PI-Crawford and approved future study team members. Data in the repository will not be linkable to you and will be combined with future self-assessment data and used, for example, to track trends and changes in diversity training and educational needs among behavioral health trainees over time. You may opt-in or opt-out of having your data included in this repository by selecting your choice below.

You may also opt in or opt out to being contacted by email in the future to participate in social justice, advocacy, and diversity training and practice related studies. If you opt in, you will provide your email address and it will be stored separately from any data on a password-protected secure network with access limited after the current study to Dr. Crawford and future approved study members. If you opt-in, you will have the ability to remove your contact information from the list when contacted for future approved studies, or by contacting Dr. Crawford by email to request removal (jcrawf@salud.unm.edu) at any time. This assessment was developed by Dr. Crawford and her co-investigator, Dr. Emily Treichler at VA San Diego. Neither Dr. Crawford nor Dr. Treichler benefit financially from the assessment’s use at this time. If you have any questions about this research project, please feel free to call Dr. Crawford at 505-554-7568. If you have questions regarding your legal rights as a research subject, you may call the UNMHSC Office of Human Research Protections at (505) 272-1129. Participation in this study is voluntary. Your decision to participant will not impact you in any way. By choosing the button “I agree to participate” you will be agreeing to participate in the above described study. Thank you for your consideration and participation.

Please note that if accessing this tool via a link sent in email prior to 12/1/2021, incentives are no longer available; nor is focus group participation.
