The Brenda Stark Award honors someone who embodies the definition of a Youth Development Worker.

Purpose of Award


To honor Brenda Stark’s legacy by recognizing an extraordinary front-line youth development worker operating in the nonprofit arena.


Definition of Youth Development Worker


Youth Development Workers assist youth in navigating the challenges of adolescence and young adulthood by coordinating and/or directly providing services that support academic achievement; promote career awareness and exploration; foster positive relationships; enhance job readiness; and nurture ethical behavior during their transition to adulthood.


Eligibility Requirements


Nominees must:

-    Be currently employed by a nonprofit organization operating in Northeast Ohio that works with young people (ages 14-24);

-    Perform jobs whose primary responsibilities center around youth development as described in the definition above.


Nominators must:

-    Know the nominee’s work as a supervisor or colleague within the same organization as the nominee;

OR

-    Know the nominee’s work as a director, supervisor or peer worker from an organization that closely collaborates with the nominee’s organization.

The following nine principles summarize the work performed by an exceptional Youth Development Worker. Refer to these when completing your responses about the nominee.



1.    Provides or coordinates services to youth that may include support for academic achievement, promotion of career awareness and exploration, development of positive relationships, preparation for employment and development of ethical behavior.

3.    Utilizes best practices that support and nurture inclusivity and human resilience.

4.    Models what highly effective youth development workers do.

5.    Engages the community at-large to support youth development initiatives.

6.    Demonstrates positive impact on lives of young people.

7.    Demonstrates high level of leadership, professionalism, and integrity in the field of youth development.

8.    Strengthens the field of youth work by providing quality training opportunities for youth workers to maximize their investment in young people.

9.    Demonstrates exceptional commitment to public service and/or educational leadership.
