Overview

The Oregon Public Health Corps is a team of University of Oregon (UO) students led by professional staff that assist Oregon communities and organizations with their various public health needs. Established in July 2020 as the University of Oregon Corona Corps, the newly named Oregon Public Health Corps (OPHC) was awarded a grant by the Oregon Health Authority in July 2021 to provide low or no cost services to partnering agencies and organizations throughout Oregon.


Recruiting New OPHC Student Members Starting Fall 2023

We are recruiting students to join the OPHC to begin work in the Fall of 2023 as a Mentor Coordinator for Bethel School District. This position runs from October 2023-June 2024, but if schedules permit, training can occur before October if schedules permit. This is a paid position as a student employee level 2 or 3, depending on experience. This role requires a commitment of four hours a week, with the majority of hours on one day of the week (Wednesday or Thursday), dependent on the needs of the school site. Student members of the OPHC should be able to commit to a minimum of 6 months of employment, with a preference of one academic year and should be able to be at the assigned school every week of mentoring (barring illness or emergencies).


Role and Responsibilities

The Mentor Coordinator position involves assisting with the coordination of middle school mentoring programs in the Bethel School District, located west of Eugene. Other Mentor Coordinator positions may open up in the Eugene (4J) and Springfield school districts.


Major duties will involve providing on-site coordination of middle school student and mentor pairs who meet weekly during school lunch periods, either on Wednesdays or Thursdays of every week. OPHC members will work directly with the middle school counselor at their assigned school, who has paired each student needing additional support with a volunteer mentor for conversation, playing games, and other activities during lunch.


Additional administrative work (e.g., emailing mentors, communicating with the program director or counselor) may be accomplished off-site outside of mentoring hours. Transportation to and from the school site is required. Mentor Coordinator will shadow a program coordinator for the first one or two weeks of work to ensure smooth operation of the program and to provide an opportunity for the new mentor coordinator to see the program in action.


The ideal candidates will be motivated students who want to make a difference in their communities and who are comfortable interacting effectively with a diverse range of members of the public.


Mentor Coordinator

•    Attends a one-hour training to learn more about the program.

•    Submits a criminal background check through the school to qualify for the program and completes the school district’s online Safe Schools Training.

•    Communicates with school site weekly on day of mentoring to check on attendance of mentees.

•    Coordinates with mentors of absent students to inform them if their mentee is absent.

•    Arrives at site prior to first lunch period to set up mentoring room.

•    Ensures all mentors are present and remain in mentor room during lunch.

•    Engages or redirects as needed to assist mentoring relationship to allow for greatest takeaways for the students.

•    After lunch period, cleans up mentoring area and locks room if needed.

•    Regularly checks in and provides support and guidance to the mentors throughout the school year. Addresses concerns when    warranted,   arranges  meetings with counselor or program director as needed.

•    Reports incidents or concerns as trained by program director.

•    Communicates regularly with mentor program director about program and participants, especially if there are concerns; communicates with school counselor as needed.

•    Detail oriented and able to work with schedules and deadlines

•    Responsible and able to work independently and as part of a team

•    Leadership qualities that promote team approaches

•    Confidentiality

•    Able to pass a criminal background check to work in a middle school environment

•    Transportation to and from assigned middle school in Eugene on time for required duties


HIPAA

•    Knowledge and ability to carry out the Privacy Rules of Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), which protects patient privacy rights and ability to carry out the HIPAA Security measures to safeguard confidential electronic information.

•    Knowledge in areas of compliance and quality assurance as it pertains to this position.

•    Understands, accepts and embraces the principles to be achieved through the compliance and ethics program.

•    Knowledge and   ability to carry out mandated reporting requirements as it pertains to this position and to support mentors in doing so as needed.

•    Knowledge of and compliance with State and Federal statutes and regulations governing both Federal and State health care programs; and UO policies, rules and regulations.


Mandatory Trainings and Attestations:

•    Required to complete the following trainings:

•   Annual HIPAA Compliance Training

•    Required to read, understand, and attest to the HIPAA policies.
