ENGL Declaration of Major Form

Welcome to the Department of Literatures in English. The English major provides a foundation in reading, writing, research, critical theory, and critical thinking relevant to a wide array of fields.

Enter using the format Year(##)-Month

(e.g. 28-May for a Spring 2028 graduate, or 28-Dec for a Fall graduate)

List your preferred prospective English major advisors (write N/A if unsure). The department will contact the first faculty member listed for approval.


Consider the English professor(s) you would prefer to be your major advisor—including but not limited to professors with whom you have taken a class and/or with whom you share an academic interest. It may be helpful to check the faculty bios on the English website for potential advisors, where you can see academic interests listed. The DUS can help you choose an advisor if you do not have one in mind.

List all English or other literature or relevant courses you are taking or have taken at Cornell including First-Year Writing Seminars.


Include course number, title, and whether completed or ongoing.


Example: ENGL 1170 FWS: Short Stories, completed

List English courses you have enrolled in for next semester or plan to complete in future semesters at Cornell.


Include course numbers and titles, and whether enrolled.


Example: ENGL 2080 Shakespeare in the 21st Century, not enrolled

Optional: List English or other literature or relevant courses you have taken at any other institution–and have been granted Cornell credit for–which you would like to propose for major credit.


Transfer credit approvals can be finalized after the declaration is complete.


Include course number, title, institution, type of credit proposed. Do not include study abroad courses.

Example: ENG 201 Shakespeare, University of College, major credit & pre-1800 credit
