Inactive Class Request

Please submit this form if you would like to apply for the Inactive class of registration. This will allow you to pay a reduced annual fee to maintain your certificate of registration. Your status will be displayed as "Inactive" on the public register and you may not engage in dispensing or identify yourself as a Registered Optician. Once Inactive, if you wish to return to practice, you may do so by requesting a status change and meeting the requirements set out in the Reinstatement and Changing from Inactive to Active Practice Policy.

The Inactive class will only be directly available to suspended opticians until July 1, 2025. If your certificate of registration is currently suspended, please ensure you submit your application by this date.

Please note that while you may request a status change effective immediately, the processing time may take up to 4 weeks. If you are still practising opticianry, you must delay your class change until you are no longer practising.

Once The College has approved your request, we will post the applicable fees to your account and notify you when you may log into the portal and pay.

Undertaking and Declaration

I hereby undertake not to engage in the practice of opticianry, including the dispensing of eye glasses, contact lenses, and subnormal vision devices, even under the supervision or delegation of the authorized practitioner, nor to supervise or direct a student optician or a registered intern optician in Ontario, until I have applied and been approved for Active status. I will not display my certificate of registration or wear my identification badge while my status remains Inactive. I understand and agree that a breach of this undertaking will be considered professional misconduct and may result in revocation and/or disciplinary proceedings against me.*

Please note that issuance of a certificate in the Inactive class of registration is subject to verification that you do not have outstanding fees or Quality Assurance requirements owing to the College.
