This form is for both school and non-school groups to request a reservation to visit Morehead Planetarium and Science Center in CHAPEL HILL, NORTH CAROLINA.

Visit Information

We are closed on Mondays.


Visit dates must occur more than 2 weeks in advance.


We are currently accepting summer reservation requests through August 15.


We will begin booking reservations for the 2025-26 School Year (September - early June) on 7/31.

  • Priority will be given to schools that requested over the summer and are on our waitlist.
  • Priority will also initially be given to requests for Fall 2025 visits. Spring 2026 requests may be temporarily waitlisted while requests for Fall 2025 are in high volume.
  • During peak request season (early August - early October) our team may take 5-7 business days to reply to inquiries.

We ask all groups to plan to arrive at least 15 minutes prior to your first scheduled program.

 
 

If so, we'll be sure to include a 30 minute gap in your schedule to allow time for lunch.


Please note that we do not have a cafeteria, snack shop, or other food/drink for sale for visitors.

You must have at least 10 total guests in your group to book a reservation.


Morehead requires a minimum of 1 adult chaperone per 10 students/children for any group field trip. To accommodate this requirement, schools/groups receive 1 complimentary adult admission per 10 students/children.

The lot in front of Morehead Planetarium is University owned & operated. Extremely limited parking is available for individual vehicles on weekdays (M-F from 7AM - 5PM) and is $1.75/hr. Public spaces in this lot are limited and may be unavailable when your group arrives, especially for groups with multiple separate vehicles. Parking spaces are on the small/compact side, so wider vehicles such as mini-buses are unable to park. There is additional parking nearby provided by the Town of Chapel Hill in the form of metered street-side spaces and parking decks.


For more information about town parking in Chapel Hill, visit the town's parking website. Be sure you take note of the location of parking areas and how close they are to the planetarium.


Schools or groups using buses or oversize vehicles may drop off in a designated location in the parking lot, but may not remain and must park off-site at an alternate location on campus or other off-campus location. Please plan accordingly for bus drivers to drop off your group, park off-site, and return to pick up your group when your programs have ended. Morehead does not currently offer a shuttle to take drivers to-from parking areas.

Generally, any extra (paid) adult chaperones may not purchase tickets separately - either in advance or on the day of the visit.


Please plan to include all guests, including paid chaperones, on your reservation and pay your total in one lump sum payment.


If your school or school district has a policy in place that prevents the school from collecting funds and paying for extra chaperone tickets, please let us know in the additional information field at the end of this form, and we can discuss accommodations with you when we reach out to schedule your visit.

While our team is dedicated to addressing all reservation requests as quickly as possible, we often receive reservation requests faster than we can address them in the months of August - early October, January, and May, and we quickly develop a backlog of requests during those times.


Based on the current volume of requests, please allow a minimum of one full week before expecting a reply from our team as we strive to reply to requests as quickly as possible.
