A project is a temporary endeavor undertaken to create a unique product, service, or result. The temporary nature of projects indicates that a project has a definite beginning and end. The UNIT PMO “Project” Characteristics (for projects managed by the PMO):
- Operates within constraints (time, budget, scope, quality)
- Is temporary in nature, with a definite beginning and end
- Creates something new or different
- Has defined objectives and the need for a team or group of individuals working towards a common goal
Tier 1: Transformative - Transformative, Mission Critical Projects
- Complex, high risk, and high uncertainty
- Large / Medium sized projects
- Cross Campus / Cross UNIT Departmental, with many concurrent work streams
- Items that are mandated
- Tight and unmovable deadlines
Tier 2: Transitional - Projects, Upgrades, Enhancements, or Improvements (College or Departmental)
- Medium sized projects
- Enhancements or improvements to existing services
- Moderately complex, low/medium risk
- Cross Departmental
- Strict timelines with some flexibility in deadlines
Tier 3: Developmental - Small Cross Team Initiatives
- Small project with low complexity/risk:
- Hours: Greater than 20 total hours of effort; less than 80 hours of effort
- Duration: Greater than 1 month; less than 3 months
- Few cross departmental dependencies
- Movable schedule / no strict deadlines
Tier 4: Operational - Small Inter Team Initiatives
- Smaller, involving 1-2 internal team(s)
- Hours: Less than 20 total hours of effort
- Duration: Less than 1 month
- Project work consists of low-risk tasks
- No cross departmental dependencies
- Movable schedule / no strict deadlines
