About WE NYC and WE Connect Mentors Program:
WE NYC – Women Entrepreneurs of New York City – is the official initiative of the City of New York to support and empower women entrepreneurs. WE NYC is the first city program in the country to address the entrepreneurship gender gap by offering a set of specialized business services to meet the needs of women entrepreneurs.
The WE Connect Mentors program, one of the diverse services offerings, provides support to the need for mentorship among women entrepreneurs. Mentors share their valuable knowledge and experience, and provide moral support, guiding mentees to become influential leaders in their chosen field.
*women is inclusive of trans women and nonbinary people.
Qualifications:
To become a WE Connect Mentor, you must meet all of the following required qualifications and at least three preferred qualifications.
Required Qualifications:
- Candidate has a proven track record of success in their field: Demonstrated success in their own business that is based in NYC or profession which can help provide valuable insights to mentees.
- Candidate is an active listener: Being attentive and receptive to mentees’ needs.
- Candidate is a skilled facilitator: Effective communication, including the ability to convey ideas clearly and provide constructive feedback.
- Candidate is passionate and committed: Ability to commit 2-8 hours per month for at least 6 months, and willingness to volunteer their time without payment or a business development goal.
- Candidate is empathetic, engaged, and empowering. It is important that the mentor understands the day to day obstacles facing women entrepreneurs in their professional and personal lives, and has the ability to empathize with them, and empower them with resources to overcome the obstacles."
- Candidate has a growth mindset: Inspire mentees to embrace challenges and continuously improve through resources, wisdom, and guidance.
- Candidate is dedicated to diversity and inclusion: Foster an inclusive and welcoming environment for mentees from diverse backgrounds and experiences.
Preferred Qualifications
- Candidate owns a business or holds expertise in an industry where women are underrepresented.
- Candidate has a demonstrated commitment to community service/volunteerism.
- Candidate is a skilled facilitator, mentor, or advisor.
- Candidate is willing and has capacity to share information about the mentorship service to their social media channels, networks, or industry peers.
- Candidate is responsive to mentees’ questions, concerns, and requests for guidance, either through regular meetings or timely email communication.
- Candidate is bilingual in English and Spanish, Russian, Chinese (Mandarin and Cantonese), Bengali, Haitian Creole, Korean, Arabic, French, Urdu, or Polish.
