Volunteer with Get Moving Houston Urban Gardens

Why volunteer with Get Moving Houston Urban Gardens?

Our gardens are a great place to meet and get to know others within the area who share your love of gardening and the environment. You could:

  • Learn something new!
  • Get community service hours and gardening experience.
  • Opportunity to get out and do something for yourself, your friends, and the community!
  • For the fun of it!

The Get Moving Houston Urban Gardens provide hands-on experience in vegetable gardening and urban agriculture to community members and encourage the consumption of local fruits and vegetables. Our gardens are located in many of Houston's underserved communities, and we believe community gardens not only improve the neighborhood, it helps the Houston become a beautiful and productive place to live for everyone!

There are no fees associated with volunteering at a Houston Health Department (HHD) urban garden. Please note that the following rules are enforced:

  1. Volunteers will have to sign a one-time HHD volunteer waiver form on the day of volunteering.
  2. Active gardening reflects all seasons. Potential gardening activities include beautification, winterization, filling the raised beds with soil, planting, weeding, watering, maintaining and harvesting at a garden.
  3. Planting and harvesting times are coordinated with HHD. Volunteers are not allowed to harvest produce from the gardens at their own discretion.
  4. The HHD urban gardens program is an organic gardening program. Use of pesticides, herbicides and insecticides made from synthetic materials as well as chemical fertilizers are not suggested. Volunteers should not bring their own natural fertilizers for use in HHD gardens except as approved by the garden manager.
  5. If a volunteer happens to witness vandalism or theft, he or she will report it to the garden manager. At no time should a volunteer attempt to stop the person.
