What Is a Crop Insurance Agent? Crop insurance agents sell Federal Crop Insurance policies to farmers, ranchers and others in the agricultural field. Crop insurance agents need skills and knowledge beyond that of a typical insurance salesperson, including a basic knowledge of crops/livestock and strong risk-management skills in relation to crop and livestock production.

What Are Crop Insurance Agent Requirements? Crop insurance agents need a crop-hail and multiple-peril insurance agent license to sell insurance policies. Licensing requirements vary by state, but in general, you need to have a high school diploma and pass a crop insurance licensing examination.

What Does a Crop Insurance Claims Adjuster Do? As a crop insurance claims adjuster, your duties are to inspect reports of field or crop damage claims filed by a farmer or other agricultural professional. Farmers purchase Federal Crop Insurance from an Approved Insurance Provider, and when a catastrophic event such as a flood or drought affects production or sales, they may file claims against losses. It’s your job to assess the claims of the policyholder, determine if there has been crop loss, examine how much damage has been done, and provide recommendations and reports to your superiors.

How to Be a Crop Insurance Claims Adjuster? To become a crop insurance claims adjuster, you need several qualifications, including education and work experience in the insurance or agricultural industry. In addition to your education, you should have strong written and verbal communication, an excellent eye for detail, familiarity with farming practices and the industry, and good customer service skills to carry out your duties and responsibilities. Some states also require a license or certification.
