Undergraduate Twinning Program:

Mentor Application

We are seeking faculty with a well-defined undergraduate research project and a research collaborator to introduce and guide a student from a historically underrepresented community through the research process.

A pair of mentors (a Project Director and a collaborator or other professional participant [Twin Mentor]) can be from any area of subduction zone and hazards research broadly defined including Science, Engineering, Policy, Social Science, and others. Of the mentor pair, only the Project Director needs to submit an application.

For more information on the Twinning Program and instructions for the mentor application, please visit the Twinning webpage.

Mentor applications close January 30, 2025.

The GEI Committee will review the applications to ensure that the undergraduate projects are well thought out and notify faculty of their acceptance by mid-December. Projects where the Project Director and/or the Twin Mentor are at a non-R1 institution, minority serving institution, or community college will take priority during the selection process. Approved remote and in-person projects will be advertised to students nationally and at your institution, respectively, to solicit student applications to the Twinning Program.

Please contact GEI Program Manager Shannon Fasola (sfasola@uoregon.edu) for any questions.

Please fill out all fields completely.

Research Project

We will aim to make connections that support both the researchers' and the students' interests. Please provide as much information as possible.

Type of Project*

Is this a Remote or In-Person project?

Please review the In-Person and Remote project descriptions here.

Please provide the title of the undergraduate research project.

Please provide a summary of the project.

(If your application is accepted, this description, unedited, will be shared with the students when they are selecting projects that interest them. Thus, please be sure that your response contains enough detail to allow students adequately assess their interest.)

What is the role and probable activities for a student researcher in this project?

(If your application is accepted, this description, unedited, will be shared with the students when they are selecting projects that interest them. Thus, please be sure that your response contains enough detail to allow students adequately assess their interest.)

Please list any desired intern qualifications and/or technical skills.

Twin Mentor

If your project is accepted, we will reach out to the Twin Mentor for confirmation of their participation before we advertise the project to students.

Who is your research partner?

What is your research partner's institution?

Please enter your research partner's contact information.

Please briefly describe how your chosen research partner will contribute to this project and the mentoring of your intern.

Mentoring

Milestones

For each of the following, describe at least three goals that you and the intern will be able to use to measure their progress and growth.

Please describe how you plan to monitor your intern's progress throughout the project (academic school year and summer) and make use of the aforementioned goals.

Mentor Meetings*

Because interns often have questions and need guidance on their projects, we have found that interns benefit from consistently meeting with their project mentor(s). Will either you, or someone in your research mentoring team, be able to meet with your intern at least once a week to discuss the progress of their research project?

Please briefly describe your previous experience working with undergraduates on research.

Summer Session

During the summer, the student has the option of traveling to the Project Director’s institution to continue the research (or to the Twin mentor's institution if the intern is at the Project Director's institution during the academic year). We want the experience to be beneficial and worthwhile for the intern. So, this is a space to see what works best for the Project Director and what their needs are with regards to the research project.

Note the GEI Program Manager will help coordinate logistics for hosting the intern. We are able to cover up to about 5 weeks of summer lodging for the student's visit.

For example: Over the summer the intern will have the opportunity to travel to X to do Y....

(If your application is accepted, this description, unedited, will be shared with the students along with the Project Summary and Role of Student Researcher.)

  • Are you willing to host the intern for the summer?
  • If so, how long would you be willing to host the intern over the summer?
  • If not, are you willing to continue working remotely with the intern over the summer?
  • Is your research partner willing to host the intern for the summer?
  • If so, for how long would they be willing to host the intern.

List any dates you will NOT be available to the intern during the summer session (e.g. vacation, fieldwork, etc):

We recognize that the summer months are often busy with travel. Whenever you are not on campus, who will mentor your intern?

Graduate/PostDoc Mentor*

Will you have a graduate/post-doc co-mentor for your intern?

Is there any additional information you would like the GEI committee to know not addressed in the application?
