Professional Engineering Experience

The Professional Engineering Experience placement program is a cornerstone of RMIT University’s approach to industry-relevant education and training.

Students gain the practical experience and work-ready skills they need to thrive in industry.

Your organisation can benefit from hosting an internship in the following ways:

  • enthusiasm and new ideas
  • trial potential future employees
  • create a talent pipeline
  • developing links with the University
  • placements run on a flexible term so dates can be organised to suit your business needs.

Opportunities are promoted on RMIT jobs notice board where we can specify any skill requirements.

For students to receive credit towards their studies. The following guidelines must be met.

The guidelines are based on criteria from Engineers Australia are as follows:

  • the placement must last at least 10 weeks full time i.e. 50 days (or the part-time equivalent)*. If unpaid, the placement cannot last longer than 12 weeks full-time (or the part-time equivalent).
  • the placement must be engineering work. Engineering work is classified by us as work that is only available to engineering undergraduates or graduates. If the work could be done by someone without an engineering degree/without studying engineering, it is not engineering work. Further, engineering work should involve activities and projects that allow students to develop their competence in engineering as well as their adaptability to professional environments. The work should involve elements of design, planning, and problem solving. Repetitive work such as assembly, maintenance, repair and installation is not considered engineering work.
  • the placement should be supervised by a qualified and practising engineer.

*When days are longer than 8 hours, or fractions of a day the time is measured as hours, this works out to between 350-400 hours for the 10 & 12 weeks.
