Transfer Credit Evaluation Request

Undergraduates should use the form below to request a course-to-course equivalency transfer credit evaluation. Typical processing time for this form is 6-8 weeks, so ensure that your request is submitted in a timely manner. Please note that incomplete requests, such as requests missing syllabi or any of the required information, will be automatically denied.

This form should be used to request one course equivalency at a time. If you need to submit multiple equivalency requests, you must submit multiple forms. (Note: There is an exception for completing a Math or Physics series, as described below.)

This form should not be used to request Program Elective credit. For that type of request, please contact your major department directly.

For questions or assistance with this form, please submit a help request.

Important: Stanford Online High School Courses are not accepted for transfer credit.

(e.g. Econ 101)

This form should be used to request one course equivalency at a time. If you need to submit multiple equivalency requests, you must submit multiple forms.

For Math or Physics series only, if you have multiple courses elsewhere corresponding to multiple courses here in a manner that is not 1-to-1 matching, you may submit them collectively.

(e.g., Principles of Macroeconomics)

(e.g. Econ 1)

This form will be routed to the selected department for review and approval. For example, mathematics courses will be routed to the Math department. Forms routed to the incorrect department will be automatically denied.

If the department is not listed, they are not reviewing course-to-course equivalency requests. You will not be able to have your external course reviewed for equivalency and should instead work with your home department to pursue an internal transfer exception (i.e. Program Elective credit). Please do not pick an alternate department; your request will be denied.

Your explanation should include a comparison of the course content and why you believe the content is equivalent. This information, in addition to the external course syllabus, will be reviewed by the Stanford course-owning department to determine equivalency.

Important:

The Division for Literatures, Cultures, and Languages (DLCL) does not review equivalency requests for language instruction courses. If this request pertains to a language instruction course, do not submit this form.

Language courses must be evaluated by the Language Center. Visit this page for more information.

Important:

1. If you took single-variable calculus in a two-semester system, please submit both courses together for Math 19/20/21 credit.

2. Transfer credit requests for Math 51 and/or Math 53 credit must include an accompanying annotated syllabus containing a list of topics to demonstrate how the course(s) taken satisfy the course content for Math 51 and/or Math 53 as described in the Math 51-52-53 topics list. For Math 51, transfer credit will likely need two courses: one on linear algebra, and one on multivariable optimization. For Math 53, transfer credit will likely need two courses: one on ordinary differential equations using linear algebra, and one on PDE/Fourier material.

3. If you want credit for Math 51 and Math 52, please submit them together.

4. Everyone who gets Math 51 transfer credit from elsewhere is urged to read this webpage for guidance on targeted reading about the overlap of linear algebra and multivariable optimization material from the Math 51 book not covered in standard courses elsewhere.

Important:

The Physics Department does not accept equivalency from independent study or online-only courses. If you are requesting an evaluation for an independent study or online-only courses, please contact your home (declared) department.

Upload the syllabus from when you took the external course. Requests that do not contain the syllabus or that do not give an informative description of the content coverage (e.g., list chapters in a book without official documentation of the topics therein) will be denied.

Important: file name must include the course name (e.g. Econ 101).
