Seed and Equipment Funding Proposal Intake Form (SPRING 2024)

Thank you for your interest in the Paula M. Trienens Institute for Sustainability and Energy seed and equipment funding programs. Applications will be accepted semiannually, with the next upcoming deadline of 3/1/2024 for the spring funding cycle.


Seed funding (budget maximum $85k/year to cover a post doc (or graduate student), fringe, supplies, services, travel, tuition, and publication costs for 1 year). The purpose is to facilitate new directions of faculty research that target emerging areas in sustainability and energy; develop, test, and refine new research hypotheses to researchers to generate initial data and partnerships needed to secure additional funding and resources from federal agencies and other sponsors for long-term impact.


Lab instrumentation – Funds equipment and testing capabilities of existing lab facilities that require capital equipment to perform cutting-edge research. Allows scientists to test newly developed materials, processes, and prototypes, with an eye toward scalability.

Eligibility - Tenure track faculty and research faculty who have applied to be Trienens Institute Faculty Affiliate are welcome to apply. Awardees will also agree their proposal possibly being highlighted in Institute promotions or press. Prior funding to be spent/closed out and all deliverables received before new funding will be awarded. It is allowable to be a co-investigator on more than one award; however, the primary investigator should only have one active award.


Preference - Interdisciplinary proposals with more than one faculty member in more than one department/school; One year proposals are preferred, but no proposals over two years will be considered. Proposals with potential for greater and more immediate impact/outcomes.


Allowable - Salary, stipend, and fringe benefits for Postdocs and Graduate Students (faculty and staff salary will be considered on a case by case basis); Research related supplies, services, travel, equipment, tuition, and publication costs.


Not Allowable - Funding toward required costshare on federal proposals/awards, Contracts to external organizations including Argonne National Lab (ANL) will be considered on a case by case basis. Note that ANL may have overhead rates that will be prohibitive given size of this funding call.


Submissions will be reviewed by a panel consisting of faculty from several schools and departments based on the attached scoring rubric. Funding decisions will be sent via award or unfunded letters that include details regarding the decision.

Deliverables

Deliverables are outlined in the award letter and include acknowledging funding and publications, letting the Institute know of grant submissions enabled by the funding, the final report and willingness to communicate with the Institute Mar/Com team.
