In accordance with AS.14.30.760(a)(1), each local school district shall use a literacy screener in Kindergarten through 3rd Grade. The Alaska Department of Education and Early Development (DEED) has adopted the literacy screener Amplify mCLASS with DIBELS 8th Edition for all districts to use free of charge. While DEED encourages the use of this screener, districts have the option of using locally selected literacy screeners that are approved by Alaska Department of Education and Early Development as outlined in the Alaska Reads Act.

If a school district is interested in using a literacy screener other than the state-provided literacy screener, the district must submit the application and evidence requested in this application packet on or before April 15th each year to be considered for the upcoming school year. Districts will be notified of approval on or before May 15th. Submission of a literacy screener waiver application does not guarantee approval.
