Chainsaw Request Form
Safety is the main consideration, so it is heavily preferred to conduct all chainsaw work when youth are NOT present and only when necessary.
If chainsaw and/or tree-felling work is required on any Scouts Canada property, a request must be sent to the Property Operations Manager for approval at least 72 hours in advance of the requested work date. All work must adhere to Industry best practices and provincial Occupational Health and Safety board approved work zones when chainsaws are being used at a property.
These guidelines include:
• A work zone at minimum twice the length of the tree in every direction or 10 meters in all directions whatever is greater if the
• The use of barriers such as fencing, caution tape, and pylons where a natural barrier does not exist.
• A minimum of one spotter who must be an adult Scouter, certified and trained in the use of chainsaws and felling trees, equipped with PPE, a high visibility vest, and a whistle watching the work zone to ensure no one, except the chainsaw operator is within the zone. Recommend having a second spotter to help guide tree falling and safeguard certified chainsaw operator.
• If the work zone is breached, all equipment must be turned off.
• No youth would be allowed within 100 meters or inside the work zone if a chainsaw is present.
• Spectators of any age, to felling operations are not permitted.
• Notice of and zone restrictions on chainsaw usage in an area must be given to everyone who is on the camp/property at that time prior to zoning the area.
• A risk identification process is in place that will be triggered by this Smartsheet Approval Process where the Associated Director will be consulted prior to usage of any chainsaw. The Associated Director may develop a formal advisory team of property volunteers, trained professionals, and staff to ensure the process is realistic to the efforts on the ground.
