Get Involved in UIDP Working Groups

UIDP member representatives are invited to participate in UIDP working groups or to nominate their colleagues. Generally, working group members participate in a series of one-hour virtual meetings in which the scope of a UIDP Project is refined, the key topic areas identified, challenges and opportunities are discussed, and the university and industry perspectives are elucidated.

UIDP Projects include quick guides, reference guides, case studies, e-magazines and any other UIDP resources that go through UIDP's modified peer review process.

Anyone from a UIDP member organization can participate.

UIDP Projects

The purpose of this UIDP project is to identify the key players in innovation ecosystems (such as R1 research institutions, HBCUs, community colleges, startups, community groups, large companies, economic development offices, etc) and to identify a set of roles and responsibilities that can reasonably be requested from each key player.

The purpose of this UIDP project is to explore different approaches for identifying and building meaningful partnerships with the different organizations that make up an innovation ecosystem. This project will take matchmaking approaches used for developing consortia or individual U-I partnerships and will apply those approaches to the concept of building regional or place-based innovation ecosystems. The outcome will explain the university and industry perspectives on the approaches presented and will apply them to contemporary partnering needs such as those found in the NSF ENGINES or EDA Tech Hubs programs.

This quick guide will provide a concise overview of the reasons that companies opt to participate in national government funded research projects and the reasons that companies choose to avoid them. University members will be asked to share their views on the requirements and expectations that companies should be aware of before joining a university-led application for government funding. Meanwhile, company members are invited to share their concerns or questions about the participation in government funded initiatives.

This project will take an exhaustive look at all the different ways that companies and universities can work together in a research and innovation context. The working group will look at the tables originally published in the UIDP Partnership Continuum and will add contemporary forms of U-I engagement to the lists. The group will also be asked for exemplars and press releases that UIDP can link to as this resource is revised and modernized.

This quick guide will provide guidance on the key considerations, university perspective, and industry perspective on internships on the PhD level.

Grant, cooperative agreement, or contracts with the U.S. federal government often include clauses that flow down to collaborators (academic or industry).

Areas of Interest

Please indicate which of the following broad topic areas interest you.

Projects in this category will focus on the identification and development of strategic engagements between companies and universities. Project topics may include identifying different levels of collaboration, types of U-I engagement, and strategies for selecting strategic alliances.

With the increase in funding and interest in developing ecosystems driven by innovation, UIDP is undertaking projects to support its members. Innovation ecosystems as defined by recent U.S. government programs such as the EDA Tech Hubs or the NSF Engines typically include multiple types of academic institutions, companies (large and small), economic development, and workforce development supported to support technological advancement.

Workforce development related to industry sponsored research, the development of graduate-level training or exchange program, and the roll-out of experiential learning initiatives are all examples of talent development at UIDP member organizations.
