The Tactile Toolbox: A 3D Printing Library for Crop Scouts and Researchers
We invite you to join the working group The Tactile Toolbox: A 3D Printing Library for Crop Scouts and Researchers to revolutionize integrated pest management (IPM) and field crop research.
A key challenge in IPM practice and crop research is accurately quantifying disease and insect injury severity. Visual assessment methods can lead to inconsistent results, affecting the evaluation of fungicide efficacy and insect leaf defoliation. To overcome these limitations, we propose using 3D printing tools.
With 3D printed models, individuals can interact and gain a tactile experience, enhancing understanding and improving accuracy in severity assessment. These models offer customization, flexibility, and an immersive learning experience for IPM, surpassing traditional training tools like standard area diagrams and computer software.
"The Tactile Toolbox" working group, developed through the North Central IPM Center (USDA-NIFA Award 2022-70006-38001), aims to understand the needs of 3D printing in IPM and devise innovative solutions. We will establish a library for 3D printing materials, enabling the sharing and access of models related to crop diseases, insect damage, and assessment techniques. Additionally, we will organize a 3D printing workshop, bringing together academia, industry, and government agencies to exchange ideas, showcase advancements, and promote the adoption of 3D printing in IPM practices.
Joining "The Tactile Toolbox" working group allows you to contribute to improving diagnostics, assessment, and overall decision-making in IPM. This is an exciting opportunity to be at the forefront of agricultural technology and make a tangible impact on crop production. Don't miss the opportunity to join a community of crop scouts and researchers, and contribute to shaping the future of IPM with 3D printing.
Register here now and join "The Tactile Toolbox" working group! You will be added to our Basecamp where we will share information and resources.
