City of Detroit Open Data Challenge
Thank you for participating in the City of Detroit's Open Data Challenge!
The guidelines are as follows:
Category 1) Detroit Open Data Visualization:
- Using our most popular datasets (for example Fire Incidents or 911 Calls for Service), or others you find interesting, we want YOU to come up with original insights and data visualizations that say something new (or old, but interesting!) about Detroit.
- Everyone is eligible to participate in this challenge, but you must use data contained in the Detroit Open Data Portal (other sources may be used in conjunction).
- Create your visualization(s) using the Open Data Portal itself, your preferred data visualization tool, or your preferred artistic medium. All pieces must be submitted as image files in a JPEG or PNG format. Be sure to cite your sources somewhere in the image.
- One entry will be selected by the Detroit Open Data Team for inclusion in our annual report, and the rest will be featured on the homepage throughout the year.
Category 2) Data Doodles:
- For 5-7 days, keep count and record how many times you see, do, hear, or feel ONE THING every day in Detroit. For example, number of phone calls or texts you receive, meetings, type of cars you see, fire hydrants, people you see, or even feelings... data is everywhere!
- With your collected data, use your doodle skills to represent the data in a drawing. Send us a picture (JPEG, PNG formats) of your Doodle with a brief explanation of what is the data you collected, how often it was collected, and why you chose it.
- Please DO NOT include private identifiable information (PII).
Category 3) Detroit Open Data Postcards:
- Send us your poem, song, tweet, funny story, etc. in a Word or txt document, JPEG, or PNG image. The topic must be related to your thoughts about your thoughts on open data (for example, challenges, the promise of open data, a funny experience you’ve had using it, how it has helped, what is still needed to improve it, etc.).
For all categories:
Deadline to submit your creation is March 25, 2024.
If you need some help navigating the Open Data Portal, make sure to check the FAQ section on the ODP. If you have other questions not mentioned in there, send them to Djennin.Casab@detroitmi.gov and we’ll be happy to assist!
