Lakota Nation Scholarship

Application Period: October 1 – Feb 1


Established in 2021, this scholarship supports Native American students pursuing post secondary education opportunities.


Purpose: The Sanford Health Lakota Nation Scholarship is awarded to any Native American, who has demonstrated leadership and commitment in their community. Award recipients must have demonstrated exceptional character and leadership in furthering their own progress and in enriching the lives of others, especially in service, academics, and community involvement.


Eligibility:

  • Member of a Native American tribe or Lineal Descendent
  • Be accepted and/or pursuing a degree as a full-time* student at a public or private, US-based accredited institution of higher education
  • Must attend or be a graduate from a school that participates in the Lakota Nation Invitational OR a Sisseton Wahpeton Oyate Tribe Member


Selection Process:

  • Applications will be reviewed and scholarship recipients will be selected in accordance with the written criteria established.
  • All qualified applicants will be considered.
  • All application criteria, questions and appropriate paperwork must be completed to be considered. Specific examples of activities and achievements are especially helpful to the selection committee.


Amount: Each scholarship awarded will be $2,500.


Renewal Process: This scholarship is not renewable. Native American members must reapply on a yearly basis.

  • Proof of Tribal enrollment or Lineal Descendent
  • Current Unofficial Transcript (GPA must be 2.0 or higher to be considered)
  • College Acceptance Letter (High school students) OR Enrollment Letter (College students)
  • Essay (500-1,000 words) telling us about yourself, your background and how you demonstrate community service, scholarship, humble leadership, and/or impact.
  • 1 character recommendation (Link will be sent to recommender to complete upon application submission)
