Book a Biologist session request form

SIGN UP COMING SOON FOR FY24!

In this virtual experience, an expert guest speaker will engage with Bay Area middle or high school students for 45-60 minutes.

We offer two main types of sessions:

  • Meet a scientist: This session is informal and conversational. The Biologist will give a 5- to 10-minute presentation about who they are, including a bit about their personal history, path into science, current work, and career goals. The rest of the session will be an open Q&A from students.
  • Research presentation: In this session, the Biologist will give a 20-minute presentation about their current work and studies, giving students a sneak peek into cutting-edge research. The rest of the session will be an open Q&A from students.

Overview of process

  1. New requests will be reviewed by the program coordinator, who will be in touch with any clarifying questions.
  2. Your request will then be shared with our volunteers, who will be able to select classes that fit their schedule.
  3. The program coordinator will introduce you to the volunteer via email.
  4. You and the volunteer will work together to finalize session specifics (time/date, classroom link, etc)
  5. After finishing, please fill out a survey about your experience. As our volunteers are young scientists who are actively interested in improving their science communication skills, they appreciate your feedback and suggestions!

About our volunteers

The biologists are primarily graduate students and postdoctoral fellows from the Stanford School of Medicine who are interested in engaging with youth about science. In rare cases, you may be matched with a volunteer from a different institution or company. Please note that we currently have limited volunteers with ecology or environmental science expertise.

Please note that as sessions are dependent on volunteer availability, we are not able to accommodate all requests. Priority is given to underserved schools.
