Citrus College Counselor Training and Preparation Program

OVERVIEW


The Citrus College Counselor Training and Preparation program was developed to provide exposure and training to graduate students seeking to pursue community college counseling positions. Participants of the program will have the opportunity to to serve students from diverse backgrounds and reflect on the educational mission of California community colleges. This Citrus College Counselor Training and Preparation program is unpaid and will consist of training workshops, observation of counseling sessions and counseling courses, attendance at department meetings and assistance in registration/transfer workshops. Candidates interested in the position should complete and submit this online application. We are looking for six counselor training interns beginning fall 2024.


IMPORTANT NOTE: Participation in the program is NOT a guarantee of future employment at Citrus College.


PROGRAM SCHEDULE


The program is an unpaid, one academic year commitment (16 weeks in fall and 16 weeks in spring), designed to provide the trainee with an opportunity to become more knowledgeable about the many and varied responsibilities in being a counselor at the community college.


  • There is a mandatory orientation in August, dates to be determined.
  • Time commitment: Trainees are expected to be available on a weekly basis for a minimum of 15 hours per week and a maximum of 20 hours per week. Although hours are flexible, preference may be given to trainees who are available on weekdays between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. (Tuesday and Wednesday we close at 7 p.m.)

Program interns will be able to:


  • Demonstrate knowledge of the services offered at Citrus College.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of time commitments and responsibilities of community college counseling faculty.
  • Demonstrate and understanding of Citrus College's academic policies and practices as it pertains to student services.
  • Increase level of confidence and competency in the field of community college counseling.
  • Acquire valuable work experience for future job reference.
  • Attend counseling department meetings and observe counseling courses.
  • Receive training in academic, transfer, and career counseling at the community college.


SELECTION REQUIREMENTS FOR CANDIDATES


  • Actively enrolled in a master's degree in counseling, rehabilitation counseling, clinical psychology, counseling psychology, guidance counseling, educational counseling, social work, career development, marriage and family therapy or marriage, family and child counseling, or the equivalent.  
  • Completion of one year in a graduate program before beginning the program.
  • Possess excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Be self-motivated in completing assigned tasks or projects.
  • Basic computer proficiency.
  • Experience in working with or a desire to work with diverse populations.
