Patient Safety Training Center at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Ground Rules for Participation
The Simulation-Based Education and Research (SBER) department is committed to having your experience in the Center directed toward helping you to achieve technical, professional, and personal growth as a critical-thinking healthcare provider. We believe that a safe, nonjudgmental environment is a necessity for optimal learning experiences. We encourage you to use reflection as a learning tool, explore the development of relationships, and enjoy this opportunity to learn. 1. Participation • All participants in simulation activities are here to learn. It is assumed that each learner is intelligent, cares about his/her practice and wants to improve. • Participants will be asked to participate in simulated trainings that will challenge them to develop and demonstrate knowledge, skill techniques, problem solving skills, teamwork and communication skills. • All learners will strive to suspend disbelief and fully engage in the activities as they would in their actual clinical practice. • All training session and environments may be observed and/or recorded. 2. Professionalism/Respect • All participants are expected to engage in professional behaviors while participating in simulation activities as they would in any clinical environment. This includes professional attire as worn in a clinical setting. • Participants, facilitators, and instructors participating in SBER trainings will be respectful and avoid interfering with the learning experiences of other groups. • Food and drink are allowed only in the lobby, kitchen or debriefing rooms. No food or drink are allowed in any training areas or control rooms. • Treat all human patient simulators and training equipment with respect. Do not write on or apply prep solution to or otherwise tarnish the human patient simulators, trainers or training equipment. • Feedback will be given to participants in a thoughtful, honest and reflective way. • Instructors are asked to begin and end their sessions within the scheduled session time frame. This will assist the SBER staff to maintain a schedule that will better meet the needs of all we serve. • Notice of cancellation needs to be sent to the SBER Master Scheduler as soon as possible (603-653-3399). • Facilitators/instructors/educators and SBER personnel are responsible for ensuring that all ground rules are being followed. 3. Confidentiality • The aptitude and performance of individual learners will not be shared with anyone not participating in a learning activity, with the exception of personnel directly responsible for the learner’s ability to perform the functions being taught in a real world setting. • Any evaluation of a learner’s performance may be used by the facilitator/instructor to meet mutually agreed upon goals and evaluation purposes. • Recording of a simulated training, including learner participation, may be used as a teaching tool during the reflection or debriefing at the completion of each training and for feedback and discussion with facilitators/instructors. In some cases, the recordings will be used for evaluation and assessment. These recordings will not be used for any purposes other than those described above unless consent is obtained. 4. Safety • All participants must exercise safety standards as if they are in an actual clinical setting, including but not limited to: hand hygiene, patient identification, use of PPE, handling of sharps, etc. • The PSTC is NOT a latex free environment. In the event that participants, facilitators, instructors or educators fail to abide by these ground rules, SBER leadership will discuss the issue with the individual and they will be offered the opportunity to modify their behavior. Should the individual be unable or unwilling to modify their behavior, they may be asked to leave the PSTC. I have read and agree to abide by the ground rules that govern my participation in the PSTC.
