Request to change from representing another Nation to GBR

This form is for requests to change from representing another nation to Great Britain to another nation at FIE international competition.


The rules around changing representational nationality are set by the FIE and information is available on the FIE website. Chapter 9.2 of the FIE Statutes and Chapter 1.4 of the FIE Administrative Rules


For changes relating to representing Home Nations (Scotland, England, Wales etc) please contact the relevant Home Nation bodies directly.


Before applying athletes should ensure that they understand all eligibility requirements, and should not request a change to GBR if they are not able to meet them.

As part of changing Nationality British Fencing is required to forward to the FIE the following:

  • a letter from British Fencing accepting the transfer and requesting the cancellation or reduction of the 3 year period only for just reasons;
  • a letter from the athlete requesting the change of nationality;
  • a letter from the former federation accepting the transfer and requesting the cancellation or reduction of the 3 year period only for just reasons;
  • a copy of the athlete’s valid identity document (British Passport) indicating their new nationality;
  • if the athlete is a minor, a letter from his/her parents requesting the change of nationality, and a photocopy of their passports;
  • if the new nationality has been obtained by marriage, a copy of the marriage certificate and its official translation into English, or French or Spanish.

This must match your BF Membership record, your passport and your most recent FIE licence.

Note - Once an athlete has made one nationality change there are no current circumstances under which they are permitted to change again.

Please provide the contact details (name and email address) of the person you are liaising with at your current Federation.


You will need to contact your current federation and organise for them to supply you with a letter from the accepting the transfer and requesting the cancellation or reduction of the 3 year non compete period.

Athletes that have not competed in the last three years do not need a waiver. Your current federation will still need to issue a letter agreeing to the change.

This includes IOC zonal Games - eg European Games.


Additional rules exist around Nationality changes for the Games (IOC, EOC), athletes should still complete the form but should expect longer timescales in processing a change.
