Daniel K. Inouye Innovation Award 2025

Submission Form

As a part of Maui Economic Development Board's Ke Alahele Education Fund Benefit Dinner and Auction on August 23, 2025, MEDB is accepting submissions for the Daniel K. Inouye Innovation Award. This award is given to the student project that demonstrates the most innovative use of science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) in service of our community. The award of $5,000 will be presented to the winning student(s) at the Ke Alahele event.


Eligibility Details:

-Only Maui County public school students in grades 6-12 and those who graduated from high school in 2025 are eligible to apply.

-Projects must have been completed during the 2024-25 school year or summer 2025.

-Students are welcome to submit projects completed as part of a school course or independently, including work for a school assignment, club, or internship.

-Individual students and teams of up to 5 students can apply.

-Submissions will only be accepted using this online form. Please do not email submissions.

The submission deadline is Monday, August 11 at 11:59pm. The finalists will be notified on Friday, August 15, and they will be invited to attend the Ke Alahele event taking place on August 23. The winner will be announced at the event.

Eligible teams may have 1-5 members (including the team leader).

Please list the grade levels of all team members. Students in grades 6-12 or who graduated from high school in 2025 are eligible to apply.

When was this project completed?

Your school must be a Maui County public school to be eligible for this award.

Please provide the name and contact information of a teacher at your school who can confirm your team is made up of only Maui County public school students. This teacher does not need to be familiar with your team's project.


Provide an introduction to your project, including the primary objectives and your team's motivation for undertaking the project. Please answer questions 1-5 in complete sentences.

Describe your team's process in completing the project. How did you come up with the project idea and design? How long did the project take to complete? Did your team encounter any major challenges that you had to overcome?

What STEM skills, knowledge, and/or tools were required to develop and complete the project? Did your team have to do research and/or learn new skills in order to complete the project?

What were the outcomes of the project? Were your primary objectives achieved?

How is your project designed to provide a service to your community? What community concern or problem does your project address?

Provide at least one photo of the finished project. Only one photo is required. Optionally, you may upload additional photos and supporting documents related to your project here as well (such as a research paper, presentation slides, video, works cited or bibliography, lab report, etc.). These additional materials are not required but may make your submission more competitive.
