STEMbassador request form

In this virtual experience, an expert guest speaker will engage with your Bay Area middle or high school students for 45-60 minutes.

We offer two main types of sessions:

  • Meet a STEMbassador: This session is informal and conversational. The STEMbassador will give a 5- to 10-minute presentation about who they are, including a bit about their personal history, path into science, current work, and career goals. The rest of the session will be an open Q&A from students.
  • STEM Project Talk: In this session, the STEMbassador will give a 20-minute presentation about their inspiring projects, research or studies, giving students a sneak peek into cutting-edge research. The rest of the session will be an open Q&A from students.

Overview of process

  1. New requests will be reviewed by the program coordinator, who will be in touch with any clarifying questions.
  2. Your request will then be shared with our volunteers, who will be able to select classes that fit their schedule.
  3. The program coordinator will introduce you to the volunteer via email.
  4. You and the volunteer will work together to finalize session specifics (time/date, classroom link, etc)
  5. After finishing, please fill out a survey about your experience. As our volunteers are young scientists who are actively interested in improving their science communication skills, they appreciate your feedback and suggestions!

Please note that this program is limited to STEMbassador program content and is designed exclusively for virtual participation. Due to the nature of the virtual format, we are do not provide volunteer training or background checks for in-person sessions. Any engagement with a volunteer to provide services in-person or outside the program's standard content will be at your own discretion and subject to the volunteer policies and requirements of your school district. We strongly recommend exercising caution and following your district’s established protocols for interacting with volunteers in person.

***As sessions are dependent on volunteer availability, we are not able to accommodate all requests. Priority is given to Title I schools.

Matching you to a STEMbassador

Our volunteer pool is mainly Biologists and Computer Scientists, but it is always expanding. We have representatives from all stages in their career from near peer undergraduates to post career retirees.

While we may not be able to accommodate all special requests, we will do our best to match you with an appropriate volunteer speaker.

We welcome and encourage specific requests, as our volunteers are excited when they are a perfect match for a class. However, please be clear where you are flexible, as this will expedite the match process (ie is this a "would be nice to have" or a "must have" request).

Where "average" is defined as the familiarity you would expect from a general U.S. student of that grade level

e.g. age, gender, language, ethnicity, etc.

This information helps our STEMbassadors fine tune their presentations to fit your class.

STEMbassadors may be able to share materials related to their current work or career path. Materials may not be available from all volunteers or on all topics.
