Course Support

*Requests after the deadline will be considered on a rolling basis.
Pitzer faculty may request to hire a student Course Assistant, Grader, Technical Assistant, or Tutor for up to 5 hours/week.
Types of Student Assistants:
Technical Assistants

Technical Assistants may help with:
- classroom technology
- sourcing and retrieving class readings
- uploading and organizing of course materials
- help with editing instructor-generated material
- These student workers are expected to possess basic, but not necessarily specialized, technical skills.
Course Assistants

Course Assistants may assist with:
- Conducting review or discussion sections with content prepared by the supervisor
- Holding group discussion (recitation) sessions with content prepared by the supervisor
- Messaging to students such as sending out notices and reminders
- Support the coordination of materials and printouts for the course with the use of faculty resources and collaboration with administrative offices.
- May serve as a liaison for field trip and event coordination for the course in collaboration with supervisor and Office of the Dean of Faculty staff.
*Note: Approval for Course Assistants must go through the Curriculum Committee per the Faculty Handbook.
Tutors

Tutoring qualifications and responsibilities include:
- Candidates must be in good academic standing with having received an A or A- in the course they will be tutoring for. Students who are on academic probation are not eligible to apply.
- Candidates must be recommended by the faculty member of the course they will be tutoring for. Preference will be given to those who have taken the course with the instructor and who attended office hours or tutoring.
- Respond to requests for tutoring within 24 hours of receiving them. Be able to have consistent hours in a drop-in tutor atmosphere.
- Attend every scheduled tutorial and prepare thoroughly for each tutorial.
Graders

Graders may assist with:
- Grading assessments under the instructor’s supervision
- The grader will only grade or evaluate student work that is relatively unambiguous (true/false, multiple choice, vocabulary, short responses to questions with specific answers) and with answer keys provided by the faculty member in charge.
- Uploading assignment grades in online grade book
- Must maintain confidentiality and privacy of student work at all times.

Once the DOF team has reviewed your request, ensuring it meets all criteria and is within budget parameters, Carlos Alvarez will be in contact with information on next steps.
Students should only work once the hiring process is complete and notification has been received.
