PRC Primary Seed Grant Application

Thank you for your interest in the PRC’s Seed Grant program. We now have three types of seed grants, so please be sure you are applying to the correct opportunity. This application is for PRC Primary Seed Grants, which are for any Faculty Scholar affiliated with the PRC and based at UT Austin.

If you are interested in the PRC Interdisciplinary Seed Grants or the PRC Interuniversity Catalyst Grants, please find the links to those applications here.

Please note that the following criteria apply to Primary Seed Grant proposals:

  • Priority is given to projects that fit within the research priorities of NICHD’s Population Dynamics Branch.
  • Priority is given to projects that fit within NICHD’s research themes and objectives.
  • Projects must involve the collection or analysis of initial data to inform a Preliminary Studies section in an NIH proposal.
  • Priority is given to projects that are conducted in the U.S. and that do not involve an intervention.
  • The PI(s) must plan to submit a proposal to NIH or another federal funding agency within 18 months of receiving the award.
  • Budgets may not exceed $20,000 in direct costs. The following items are not eligible for seed funding: faculty salaries; travel to conferences; annual memberships; faculty computers. All projected expenses should be specific to the proposed project.
  • Funds will not be disbursed until IRB approval (or a letter stating non-human subjects) is obtained and submitted to the PRC administrative team. Funds must be spent within 12 months of the award date; extensions must be approved by the PRC Director.
  • Faculty awarded a seed grant will be required to complete and submit NIH-specific human subjects forms to the PRC while receiving funding and for at least one year after funding has ended. The forms will include Inclusion Enrollment Reports and Inclusion Plans for Women, Minorities, and Children.

The application cannot be saved and must be completed in one sitting.

All projects require review by the UT IRB before they can receive PRC seed grant funding, even if the project will be considered exempt or “non-human subjects research”. NICHD requires documentation of exempt status for seed grant projects, thus you will need to have a letter from the UT IRB stating the project is exempt or non-human subjects research.
